Sunny Times

CJ7 (2008)

Written and Directed by Stephen Chow

This cannot compare to Kung Fu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer, but is still entertaining. I watched the English-dubbed version. The original Mandarin would probably be better.

HATOL: 3 stars. Watch if you have the time to spare. It's not as slapstick as the other movies of Stephen Chow (which is not a good thing). I think this is supposed to be a children's movie.

In the tradition of Hong Kong films using old songs brilliantly in their movies*, CJ7 ends with the song "Sunny" originally by Bobby Hebb. Here, the disco version by Boney M was used.

According to the fountain of knowledge that is Wikipedia, the song was written by Bobby Hebb on November 23, 1963. It was a Saturday, a day after JFK was assassinated. Bobby Hebb also lost his brother to a knife the day before. He wrote this song to remember the good days, the sunny days. These are the lyrics he wrote:

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain
The dark days are gone, and the bright days are here,
My Sunny one shines so sincere
Sunny one so true, I love you

Sunny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet
Sunny, thank you for the love you brought my way
You gave to me your all and all
Now I feel ten feet tall
Sunny one so true, I love you

Sunny, thank you for the truth you let me see
Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to C
My life was torn like a wind-blown sand,
And the rock was formed when you held my hand
Sunny one so true, I love you

Sunny, thank you for the smile upon your face
Sunny, thank you for the gleam that shows its grace
You're my spark of nature's fire,
You're my sweet complete desire
Sunny one so true, I love you
